Reef Society Cites Dr. Perry Aliño
The International Society for Reef Studies (ISRS) awarded Prof. Porfirio Aliño a plaque of recognition for his studies on development capacity. The award was given during the 12th International Coral Reef Symposium on July 9-13, 2012 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
The citation by the ISRS reads as follows:
“ 1. Bridge – for his unique ability to be a human bridge, not only between community, science and government, but also in his ability to strategically dovetail projects to sustain relationships, thereby overcoming the limitations of short term funding cycles. Evidence for this bridging is the number of the tools and project acronyms we associate with Perry, such as ICE CREAM- integrated coastal enhancement climate research and evaluation for adaptive management programme.
2. Capacity building – for his commitment to real world education by immersing his students in governance whilst also developing their capacity for science. Perry works to develop processes to build accountability and continuous improvement at the nexus of science and governance in the Philippines, for example through the Para el Mar MPAS awards, which since 1997 have recognize outstanding community-based MPAs based on objective measurement of their governance, social, and ecological impacts.
3. Inspiration – for the way Perry works, which inspires hope, creativity, and optimism where others struggle to find it. “
